What is Haywood Early College?
Haywood Early College is a non-traditional high school that is a blend of
high school and college. It is not an alternative high school or a fast-track
high school. The school is scheduled to enroll its first 9th grade class in
August of 2006.
How is Haywood Early College Funded?
Haywood Early college is funded much like any other public school in the
state of North Carolina. The school will have its own principal-dean,
counselors, teachers, etc. It will receive allocations from state and local
budgets just like other schools to purchase textbooks, instructional materials
and other items. Initial startup funds are provided by the state as part of an
11 million dollar grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
How will the school be designed?
The school will contain 5 grade levels (grades 9-13). During the 5 years
students will earn credits to graduate with a university-prep high school
diploma and a two-year college degree. Ninth grade classes will be enrolled each
year until all five grade levels are filled.
Who should attend Haywood Early College?
Students will be selected using five criteria established by the state for
early college high schools. Students (with their parents) who feel they may meet
the selection criteria are encouraged to make application to the school.
Applications will be available at the middle schools and the central office by
the middle of February. The selection criteria is as follows:
-
Demonstrated
ability to complete a university-prep high school diploma
-
Demonstrated
ability to learn in work-based learning situations
-
Demonstrated ability to
establish and maintain productive relationships with other students, teachers
and the community
-
Demonstrated traits that are historically underrepresented
in the college graduate population
-
Demonstrated desire to attend an
autonomous non-traditional school
How will Haywood Early College be different from other high schools?
The school is intentionally designed to serve students that are not already
served well at our traditional high schools. Therefore the school will not have
many traditional high school activities like sports and performing arts.
However, the school will develop and establish a number of student activities
including Student Government, student clubs and student organizations. Since
this high school is also a college, the schedule will mirror the college
schedule.
Where will Haywood Early College be located?
The state requires that early college be located on college campuses.
Therefore, Haywood Early College will be located in the Freedlander Learning
Center at
Haywood Community College. The newly renovated facility houses the college
library, contemporary classrooms, computer labs and food service facilities.
Does it cost anything to attend Haywood Early College?
There is no tuition, textbook or bus transportation cost for students. This
is true for high school and college courses and textbooks.
Can I be an Early College student if I have been home
schooled, private schooled, or am a non-resident of Haywood County?
Students who are not residents of Haywood County as well
as private and home schooled students may apply but must also follow the
Haywood County School policy and procedure established for admission of
non-residents and home schooled students to a district public high school.
This policy and procedure is available at the Haywood County Schools central
office.
